Career Growth: Is It Time to go Back to School?
Clearly Defined Goals
You need to have a clear understanding of what it is going to take to get from one step to the next. Many people make the mistake of failing to understand what they truly need to do in order to move ahead in their career. Will a degree help you get to where you need to go? Is there some other way to do it? Is your new career path a reasonable one? Do some research and find out as much information as you possibly can before you set your sights on more education.
Specificity
One thing to know about the current job market is that some degree paths lead to very specific places, while other degrees provide a broad base of options. In general, more specific training will lead to higher salaries and better jobs. Looking into careers such as nursing or any form of engineering require specific job skills, so if you are interested in those fields, then you would be wise to pursue those degrees with everything that you have.
Only Get a Non-Specific Degree if you Have a Plan
Some people will go get a liberal arts or communications degree without having any plan. Then they have a very difficult time finding employment upon graduation. Before you start with one of these degrees, have a general idea of how you are going to make it pay off. This will allow you to tailor your classes and internships to those specific experiences.
An MBA is No Guarantee
Though an MBA can help you land a management position, it is not a guarantee of one of those jobs. You will still have to work your way through a company, showing that company that you possess the necessary skills to be a good manager. Don’t think that getting an MBA will immediately lead to career success.
