The Wrong Career To Wish Your Life Away

We’re always told life is short. So, you would think we’d make the most of each moment. But, we all have to go out to work. If we were honest, that’s not how we would spend our lives given a choice. Or, is it? Surely, if you work in the field that most interests you, you’ll enjoy every moment? It could be argued that, if you feel you’re wasting time, you’re in the wrong career. But, recognizing the problem isn’t as easy as you think. A lot of us believe we’ve found the right job, without looking at the facts. We settle into careers we decide upon when we’re eighteen, or even younger. And, we plod along, either because of determination, or because we’re too stubborn to admit they no longer suit.

The good news is, once you turn your mind to it, it’s not hard to see whether you spend your time wisely. There are a few telltale signs that you would be better off doing something else. A major warning is when you start wishing away the hours. There’s no denying that even the happiest workers might count hours on say, a Friday. But, if you watch the clock every day, there’s something wrong.

Another major sign of job dissatisfaction is a failure to look to the future. It may be that you’ve stopped aiming for career progression. That’s fine if you’re happy where you are. But, this, coupled with the points above, could be a sign you aren’t happy.

But, what can you do about it? Sadly, it’s not as easy as leaving your job and getting a new one. First, that’s not always practical. What if you leave and can’t find anything else? Second, jumping headfirst into a new career could leave you in the same position a year down the line. Change is as good as a holiday, but the wrong career won’t stay exciting for long. Instead, it’s worth taking your time. Acknowledging the problem gets you halfway there. Now, be patient. Take some time to think about which career you would have, in an ideal world. Then, find out what you need to do to get it. It may be that you need to return to studying. If that’s the case, find a way to make this fit with your current situation. Companies like UAB offer online degrees in a variety of subjects, allowing you to fit study around work. Part-time courses also offer this benefit.

Or, you may need to get your name known by the right people to achieve your dream. Find out who those people are, and take steps towards getting noticed. You don’t need to wait for jobs to come up to reach out. There’s nothing wrong with sending an email of introduction to the people in question. Explain who you are, and list your credentials. If they’re impressed, they’ll make a position for you. And, when that happens, you can start enjoying your life the way you should!
